Mojang is aware of SOPA

  1. Haha, certainly a good rule of thumb to live by. :) They do a good job of blowing things out of proportion.

  4. Law enforcement in physical reality doesn't get to censor parts of the country that may be selling illegal/stolen goods. Why should it be any different on the internet?
While I believe that a reform on our anti-piracy laws could prove useful for the long term health of this country, I do not believe that any sort of censorship helps the country at all. After a while, how will we Americans know what is being censored? It could be more than just a smutty illegal download site; what if the government censored a internet article or video about something revolutionary happening in the world? We wouldn't be able to know. Ultimately, giving the government ANY sort of ability to censor something is just asking for trouble. Just look at China's internet censorship. Sure, SOPA is not even remotely near the magnitude of the "Great Firewall of China", but mark my words, 1 decade later with the wrong people in power could have us set in that direction...

  5. Even China with all the effort they put into it can no longer censor information (in the digital age). They try but they can't.

It is misleading to call this a censorship bill, this bill allows the Attorney General to SEEK a court order to take action. It also requires online service provides to respect a court order when it is given.
  6. "It is misleading to call this a censorship bill, this bill allows the Attorney General to SEEK a court order to take action. It also requires online service provides to respect a court order when it is given."

I have not said that it was a censorship bill. I am saying that giving the Attorney General, among other government installations, the ability to censor or blacklist websites will ultimately lead to abuse of the power. Abuse may not happen immediately, but I can almost guarantee you that we will learn in the future of websites unjustly censored or blacklisted, possibly even without due process.

OCILLA (Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act, or Safe Harbor Provision) requires that OSPs comply with requests to remove copyrighted or legally questionable material. It also requires OSPs to comply with court ordered actions, such as removing copyrighted material. Now, whether this particular Act works or not is a completely different argument -- my point is that online service providers are ALREADY required to respect court orders.

As I have said, the intentions of SOPA/PIPA are well-spirited, but we as the American people have an obligation to defend ourselves from potential abuse of our liberties--and in my own personal opinion, I have the right to read or view any public information found on any public website on the public internet.

Another issue I have with this Act is the possible outlawing of proxy servers. Because these could be used to fight online regulation, they may become outlawed, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. John Palfrey of the Berkman Center of Internet and Society writes "SOPA would make many [DNS] circumvention tools illegal.." and adds "The single biggest funder of circumvention tools has been and remains the U.S. Government, precisely because the role it plays in online activism. It would be highly counterproductive for the U.S. Government to both fund and outlaw the same set of tools."

If SOPA/PIPA passes, (for the sake of argument), will EMC begin paying more money to police all forum threads, previously created threads, videos, pictures, song lyrics, etc. on the EMC website? If you do decide to keep the website community active, will you support having to step up and fight legal battles for material a troll may have posted on your website to get you in trouble? Will you enjoy becoming liable for this?

Now, to be fair, SOPA/PIPA does not say that it will do all of this beyond the shadow of a doubt. But, therein lies another issue: the ambiguity of the legislation. What exactly will SOPA do? I would not vote to pass a law against, for example, using water for anything but swimming. Now, save for the obvious reasons why I would not vote to pass this "water law", I would not vote this into legislation because of the ambiguity of "anything but swimming". Does this mean legal action could be taken against me for wading or splashing in the water without swimming in it? Does this mean legal action could be taken against me if I used the water for putting out a dangerous fire? Its vague.
SOPA is meant to stop online piracy, but it fails to constitute what counts as piracy, thus leaving the oh-so-trustworthy people on the internet the option of taking legal action on someone for what MAY be piracy--and just like in real life, innocent people can/eventually will lose legal battles; thus making SOPA/PIPA a plausible medium for dishonest companies, organizations, or people to make money off of innocents.
(Please note: I mean no disrespect to anyone on these forums, if this post is taken offensively.)

  7. i think 20 million people playing minecraft would put up a good protest
  8. What is SOPA i'm not american and have never heard of it and i also that because of it i can´t play minecraft as i'm not in my computer and wanted to play in browser...
  9. Correct, you can not play in browser until tomorrow... SOPA is another infringement on basic civil rights imposed by the regime ruining the American way of life... For once, siding with the media on this one is the proper thing to do... We need a change in our entire governmental system before we plunge headfirst into Communism...

  10. Socialism and Communism are not very different (Their root words are synonyms, after all) and the current administration is Socialist. With all due respect to this (once) great land, America is becoming a Communist Country... At least until November.

If you ever told anyone thirty years ago that the President was a Communist, they would either believe you are a conspiracy theorist and want to know more or they would reject you. But in the 21st century you can just slap a new word on it and everyone loves it.

  11. Exactly, which is why I am willing to buy a one-way ticket out of the U.S. at the most worrisome act... However, at that point I may be too late... I feel that soon we will have to find coyotes to smuggle us into Mexico and Canada to escape this once great country...

the video that plays in the above channel explains it pretty well from a non-american angle. which is nice to hear. It explains pretty thoroughly the effects. It is biased, but the facts are pretty solid. It explains how blocking will happen, how the effect of the fact it is only a US bill could effect the internet experience as a whole. Its a long video. But a good watch.
  13. And odds are, if this bill is not passed and the internet is saved, they will name it something else and pass it eventually.

Because that is how the American Government works. Trick the inattentive and confuse the voter.

  14. Or, they like to sneak bad things in with OBVIOUS good things. Like..."Vote this bill yes and every American gets $20,000. Also, SOPA passes.."

  16. lol, yeah when i was studying politics My group had to spend an entire month compiling PiggyBack Bills like that. It happens often. Like Lets lower taxes 2%, censor all of your internet material, So every american can have a happy Christmas!

Similar to actions like, bring all the troops out of Afghanistan (thanks Obama!) "make sure you vote for me on February, since Im a great a president and brought you home for the holidays"

  17. When in reality it should be:

Let's bring all the troops out of Afghanistan even though I promised I'd do it within 6 months of being elected because I'm awesome and you should vote for me!
