Heroes of the Storm Guide and Discussion

  1. HoTs is Blizzard's MOBA that brings together all their universes together into a unique game. With the game's constant cross promotions with other Blizzard games, I've decided to help you all out by writing a short guide to get you started. This thread can also be used to discuss the game and ask for help too!

    Getting Started

Chances are if you're reading this, you've done the tutorial and know the basics of hero fighting, soaking experience, and taking towers and the core. So this is about the things they don't tell you.

    Hero Roles

The basic roles are, Assassin, Warrior, Specialist, Support. Yet in these roles are subcategories not spoken of. For Warriors, these include Tanks and Bruisers. A Tank's job is to soak damage and peel for allies. This means they protect the team and have high and health and/or damage mitigation. Notable tanks include Muradin, Johanna, and E.T.C.. Bruisers are high health damage dealers that can't tank as well as Tanks, many Tanks can also be bruisers if built with the right talents however. Notable Bruisers include Artanis, Sonya, and Rexxar.

Now we move onto Assassins. Assassins have Ambushers, Burst Damage, and Sustained Damage. Ambushers ambush as their title would state, they're typically good at rotating between lanes and killing isolated targets. Notable Ambushers include Valeera, Zeratul, and The Butcher. Heroes who are Burst Damage deal huge amounts of damage in a short time, making them great for taking down low health heroes. Notable examples include Li-Ming, Chromie, and Jaina. Finally we have Sustained Damage Dealers who are great at damaging targets constantly, widdling down their health. Notable examples include Illidan, Raynor, and Valla.

Specialists and Supports go hand in hand so I'll be grouping them together. They have the role of Support, Healer, Seiger, and Utility. Supports simply support the team without healing and are actually not really related to supports at all. The only two are Medivh and Tassadar. Healers actually heal the team and are what is typically called a support hero, this is a very important role that more people need to play. Notable examples include Li Li, Lucio, and Auriel. Seigers siege enemy towers and some can solo mercenary camps, it is my favorite role, but it requires lots of map awareness as you are easily ganked. Notable examples include Xul, Sylvanas, and Zagara. Then we have utility. They siege, they support, they distract and 2 of the heroes in this category are the hardest to play in the game, sound fun? The only 3 are Murky, Abathur, and The Lost Vikings or TLV for short.

That's it for now, expect a short guide on what heroes you should play as a beginner in QM soon! Have any questions? Ask below and I'll get to you quickly. One small note before I end this here, all info for the heroes I've named are available by clicking their name, this will bring you to their wiki page, enjoy!
  2. Heroes for Beginners from Each Role

Finding a simple hero for you to use when just starting can be hard, but here are heroes from each role great for beginners and who to avoid when starting.

    Heroes to Avoid When Starting

    1. The Lost Vikings
    2. Medivh
    3. Abathur
    4. Alarak
    5. Chen

    Tank
    You can't kill the metal!

ETC is Blizzard's band, the lead singer is Elite Tauren Chieftain. He has amazing CC (Crowd Control) and an ultimate that let's him jump to a location anywhere on the map. Built correctly, he can even act as a healer for the team, a weak one however. He is crazy tough to kill and is one of the strongest tanks in the game.

    Cost: 2000G
    Role: Warrior
    Franchise: World of Warcraft
Starter Build: 1: Block Party 2: Loud Speakers 3: Pinball Wizard 4: Stage Dive 5: Mic Check 6: Show Stopper 7: Crowed Pleaser

    Bruiser
    Time to die!

Sonay, the Barbarian from Diablo is a force to reckoned with. She is the very definition of a bruiser. She doesn't use mana, but instead uses a resource called fury. With a gap closer and two AoE abilities (Area of Effect), the only thing limiting her is the medium health.

    Cost: 4000G
    Role: Warrior
    Franchise: Diablo
Starter Build: 1: War paint 2: Focused Attack 3: Poisoned Spear 4: Wrath of the Berserker 5: Mystical Spear 6: Nerves of Steel 7: Ignore Pain

    Burst Damage
    I'm here to help!

Jaina is the frost mage from World of Warcraft and extremely bursty hero. She has CC on all here abilities as every single one applies a slow and heroes with the slow take more damage from her abilities. You will need to learn a bit of her combos, but she is simple at her core.

    Cost: 4000G
    Role: Assassin
    Franchise: World of Warcraft
Starter Build: 1: Deep Chill 2: Frost Shards 3: Frostbitten 4: Summon Water Elemental 5: Icy Veins 6: Numbing Blast 7: Improved Ice Block

    Sustained Damage
    Hit 'em hard and fast

Raynor is effective, yet boring, though you may recognize him from the tutorial. He has one talent build people use frequently and that one of the talents requires him to farm (Soak experience by killing minions) a lane the whole game until he completes it. He's still good for starters, just incredibly boring, great when you're tired though!

    Cost: 2000G
    Role: Assassin
    Franchise: Starcraft
Starter (and only) Build: 1: Seasoned Marksman 2: Focused Attack 3: Revolution Overdrive 4: Hyperion 5: Giant Killer 6: Bullseye 7: Nexus Frenzy

    Ambusher
Ready to have your mind blown?

Nova is a stealth hero and the original bane of QM (Quick Match). Her trait let's her become invisible (Stealth has a very hard to see shimmer when invisible) after not doing anything other than move for 3 seconds. She has amazing damage and one of her heroics can be used on anywhere on the map.

    Cost: 7000G
    Role: Assassin
    Franchise: Starcraft
Starter Build: 1: Advanced Cloaking 2: Rapid Projection 3: Snipe Master 4: Precision Strike 5: Double Tap 6: Crippling Shot 7: Precision Barrage

    Support
    Executor, I stand ready!

Tassadar is a support hero who shields allies, increasing their health. He also has amazing sustained damage and built in CC into his basic attack. He is very powerful, but requires careful timing with your shields. He is still a lot easier to play than Medivh, one of the top 3 hardest heroes to play.

    Cost: 4000G
    Role: Support
    Franchise: Starcraft
    Starter Build: 1: Khaydarin Resonance 2: Khala's Light 3: Mental Acuity 4: Archon 5: Adun's Wisdom 6: Phase Disruption 7: Storm Shield

    Healer
    Ready for adventure!

This adorable little panda and one of my 3 main heroes is amazing for beginners of not only HoTs, but those just starting to heal. All but one of her abilities automatically target allies and enemies, always healing those who need it most. Her trait lets her get out of trouble often too. Of course all of this automation is also her biggest weakness.

    Cost: 2000G
    Role: Support
    Franchise: World of Warcraft
Starter Build: 1: Conjurer's Pursuit 2: Mass Vortex 3: The Good Stuff 4: Jug of 1,000 Cups 5: Surging Winds 6: Two for One 7: Kung Fu Hustle

    Siege
    The spirits speak to me

If you played LoL or Dota 2, then Nazeebo is the hero for you. He is all about last hitting with his trait, which increases his health and mana whenever his poison kills a minion. He has tons of area denial with his Zombie Wall and heroic, Gargantuan. Really fun to play, but has really hard to land skillshots.

    Cost: 4000G
    Role: Specialist
    Franchise: Diablo
Starter Build: 1: Pandemic 2: Big Voodoo 3: Toads of Hugeness 4: Gargantuan 5: Guardian Toads 6: Ring of Poison 7: Vile Infection

    Utility
    Mrglmrglmrgl

Murky is very unique as he is great for siege and if he dies, it doesn't matter if his egg is up. As long as Murky has his egg somewhere, his respawn time is reduced to 6 seconds, he is also worth 1/4 of the experience for a hero kill. For this, he has some of the lowest health of all heroes along with Abathur. You will need to be very cautious of your egg placement however because of this.

    Cost: 7000G
    Role: Specialist
    Franchise: World of Warcraft
Starter Build: 1: Egg Hunt 2: Living the Dream 3: Black Lagoon 4: March of the Murlocs 5: Rejuvenating Bubble 6: Toxic Buildup 7: Making Inky

Thanks for checking everything out, got a question? Ask me and I'll answer as soon as possible. Feel free to discuss the game in this thread too!
