[EVENT] Flag Day Parade 2017

Discussion in 'Empire Events' started by Krysyy, Jun 14, 2017.

  1. In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated June 14th.

On EMC, we have more than just one flag to celebrate. We have many players from all over the world that come together to enjoy this awesome game. Therefore, we're going to celebrate all flags today, June 14th with a PARADE!!!
(did this last year and it went pretty well)

    How it will work:
    • Players will combine their banner with their shield.
    • Players will walk in the Parade and show off their awesome banners as they go.
      • Horses will be allowed, but will be required to move slowly in order to not overtake the person in front of them.
      • When walking/riding, please keep distance between yourself and the person in front of you so that spectators can view the banners as they pass. Krysyy will lead the parade on her (very slow) horse to set the speed.
Note: You do not have to use a country flag as your banner. If you want to represent rainbows, Batman, bunnies or a sunset, etc with your banner, then feel free to do so. Inappropriate banners will result in punishment. Please don't spoil the fun by showing up with something you know we wouldn't approve of.

So where will this Parade take place? Smp8 /v parade
    When? 9 pm EMC time
Will there be any prizes? Some random participants/spectators will win prizes. You must be ON the residence at the time of the 'drawing' in order to be eligible.
Can I just watch? Certainly. There will be a path created so that bystanders can observe the amazing flags going past. Barriers will separate the crowd from the parade.

  16. If only I knew how to make the Welsh flag using a banner.

For those who don't know what the Welsh flag is:

For those who don't know what Wales is (and also because I'm bored and also a raging patriot for my mother's home country):
You'll probably know it for King Arthur - in Welsh folklore, he was a Welsh king and he united all of Great Britain under one crown to fight the Anglo-Saxon invaders in the fifth century. Although, he is commonly associated with England (who were the Anglo-Saxons...)

It's a country in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - part of Great Britain. It is home to the Welsh people (who are descended from an ancient people from Northern Spain) - the oldest ethnic group on the island of Great Britain who were conquered by the Romans, pushed into the corner of the country by the Anglo-Saxons (who then called them the word for 'foreigner'), before being conquered by England in 1283. The country has had numerous rebellions against English rule, all of which have ended in failure. Their rule under the English was a time of intense xenophobia and hatred towards them, with many laws asking English people to kill Welshmen who wished to settle in English towns.

It was in fact, a Welsh family who freed England from French rule in 1487 - who proceeded to convert the country to Protestantism, started the British Empire, and were the first to showcase the excellence of England's navy by taking on Spain at war - back then, Spain was the equivalent of the United States in today's world, and England was nothing more than a weak great power (although it was on a rapid rise, and after the Seven Years War ended in 1763 it was the most powerful country in the world until the rise of the USA in 1945).

During the Industrial Revolution, Wales was relied on heavily for coal by the English and the Scottish. The working class of Merthyr Tydfil revolted in 1831, demanding that they be given higher wages and unemployment be ended. Here, the red flag was flown for the first time - a common sight in Socialist politics and the basis of many Socialist/Communist state flags (most notably the Soviet Union's), which was then used by the British Labour Party until the 1980s, the SDP in Germany, the FSP in France, and more (hey links back to the flag day thing). The rebels were then shot at by the British army and many rebels were killed, and Wales was punished by having their language removed from the curriculum at schools and it was replaced with English - any children who spoke Welsh were forced to wear a piece of wood around their necks that said 'WN' (Welsh Not).

At the tail end of the 19th century, Wales finally began to have a voice in British politics. David Lloyd George, a Liberal politician who was the UK's 53rd (I think?) Prime Minister from 1916 - 1922, was Welsh. A Welsh Labour Party politician, Aneurin Bevan, was the architect of the UK's National Health Service, which has since provided free-at-the-point-of-use healthcare to millions of British people. The Welsh language was also included on the record of the Voyager satellite, which plays the languages of humanity should aliens ever find it. Welsh also found a resurgence in use throughout the 20th century, and is still spoken across Wales and in the Welsh colony in Argentina.

It was finally granted governmental devolution within the UK in 1998, who could only really actually do anything after their powers were expanded in 2006. Even today, it struggles to find a voice in the UK, with the majority of politics being dictated by those in London. But hey, at least it's ranked as having the hottest people in the UK, right? That counts for something.

  17. How about the flag of St David
  18. It totally works as a substitute, but it's also not as cool. Religious connotation is also kinda weird.
    I'll check it out.
