Gradually changing the server paralleling to the shifting interests of the players would have been the saving grace EMC needs, though without change sadly, the servers will continue to dwindle. = ( Salvation starts with change. I hope they don't let it go to ruin.
I think they should make one new SMP and put up maybe a world download for the past SMPs, a server with 20 players can't sustain 10 servers without it feeling a little dead. Having one large server would bring a lot more ease to build public projects like nether highways, cities and autofarms. I know by experience, it's much more fun playing multiplayer MC when you don't have to type commands to get to other places.
