Hm, I think the wasp you found is actually of the solitary kind. Cause yeah normally in the winter, the workers die off while the queen conserves her energy for the seasons. Solitary wasps will have their eggs and then go somewhere else, and not die.
Ahh that makes sense then, I appreciate the education on this topic, it really confused me :P It was just a normal old yellow jacket. Handed her over to my brother who put her outside in the cold rain, feel kinda bad now lol
