You could get a shorter layered haircut! However long you would like to keep it would be the longest layer, and usually two or three shorter layers go on top of that. (It's really nice if you've got thick hair, too, as it thins it out a little near the bottom!)
I have done curls on occasion. I need to pull my curling iron out of the storage trailer for a wedding this weekend anyway. Maybe I'll experiment with loose curls.
