For the most part, a core i5 will run Minecraft just as well as a core i7. The only reason why you would want a core i7 is if you are planning on running software that needs a lot of processing power. A Core i5 will be more than enough for most games, since games rely more on your graphics than on the processor.
If you are still considering between the two, I would definitely recommend an i7, or at least a higher i5... You can tell the difference, if you get a less powerful i5 series processor.
If he plans on doing anything besides that, he could tell. There's a definite difference between an i5-6400 vs an i7-6700k.. But I guess if its only because of money reasons get the crappier i5 lol
The difference between a i5-6400 vs a i7-6700k? You could definitely tell the difference between them if running multiple heavy processor programs... such as both of what you mentioned
MS Office is not a heavy processor program - an i3 could run MS office just as easily as an i7. My laptop has an i5 cpu, and I can easily run 5 MC clients with a minimum of 100 fps. When you have an i5, your GPU will bottleneck games before the CPU ever does.
