  1. OK so I've looked at the live map for server 3 and I can't find a generally consistent pattern to the res numbers. For example, the top left starts at 7373 and runs down vertically to 7353 and is followed immediately by 7504 which runs down to 7487. Yes, there is a pattern, but not consistent enough or clean enough to make it worth noting on the street signs.

So here are my suggestions and calculations:

    - The town grid is 39 by 39, meaning that there are 40 streets running vertically and 40 streets running horizontally. This means there are 40^40 = 1600 intersections. Two signs each is 3200 signs. Yes this is a lot, but lets be honest, I'm sure some people have more blocks making up their home, and this is for a good cause, plus I'm willing. If granted many free speed potions, I can run from intersection to intersection very quickly, just a thought.

    - Numbers are undeniably better for navigation, localization, and prediction, but they lack novelty. And the server needs funding. So I suggest every 10th street, and including the 1st, go for auction (or simple sale) to be named after a user (or any name if they choose) for real USD. So for example, gtabmx street, 2nd, ..., 9th, apamment street, 11th, etc. There will be a possibility of 10 Paid-For street names per server. This keeps the number system intact while making the novelty of having a street named after you more precious and unique. The server gets more money, some users get to be a part of history, and people get better localization! Everyone wins. Novelty, ease of navigation, money for server.

    - All vertically running streets are titled as "Avenue" and all horizontally running streets are titled as "Street".

  2. As best as I can tell, the residence numbers are generated by spiraling outwards, clockwise, from the center of town.

To make street numbers work, numbers would have to be re-generated. This would cause confusion, and would upset several people who picked their lot because of its number.

Street names would avoid this issue, but would be too numerous to be useful. People won't be able to keep track of which street is where.

The only system that would be useful would be number-based, but re-numbering people's residences won't sit well. And really, it'd only be minimally useful when you take the live map into consideration.
  3. I don't understand why people are assuming we renumber houses. I am not suggesting that at all. I just want to number each vertical and horizontal street from 1 to 40. They currently have no names or numbers. Reses don't change a bit, just each intersection will have two signs telling you what street and avenue you are on.

  4. I WILL HELP NAME THEM! I have a very pleasant imagination? Please?
  5. We could pick names and order them alphabetically from centre out. Having different themes for each direction would also help.

    Possible themes:
Classical Gods (Apollo, Neptune, Odin, Thor, Zeus)
Capital Cities(Athens, Beijing, Canberra, Dublin, Edinburgh)
    Elements (Arsenic, Bromine, Calcium)
Film Characters (Ferris Bueller, Vincent Vega, Tyler Durden)
  6. I think the thought of street numbers needing to change was in response to shawnwhite's post about including res numbers on the sign. For example, a sign could have the street name, and also the res numbers between it and the next intersection.
  7. ONLY, IF THE ROADS AROUND MY LOT ARE CALLED LEGIT LANE.... :3

    I like the idea!
  8. If somone changes my res number i will go completley insane. It wont be pretty
  9. Ah! Alphabetically ordered street names would provide both the numerical ordering required for easy localization and the novelty! However, there are three problems. First, there are streets (horizontal) and avenues (vertical) so the right suffix word should be appended so you can know where north and east is easily. So that's not really a problem. The second issue, which is a problem, is that too many street names would take away from the uniqueness of having a street named after you, and would decrease the value someone would donate for a street name. Finally, the third problem is that the alphabet only has 26 letters while we need 40 names in one direct.

  10. No res number changes are proposed, we are talking about naming the streets. Stay calm :)

  11. Okay phew i was afraid i would lose my precious 1080
  12. Lol
  13. How about some of these names:
    - Hash98 Lane
    - Hash98 Lane
    - Hash98 Lane
    - Hash98 Lane
    - Hash98 Lane
    - Hash98 Lane
and finaly, the one and only:
    Hash98 Lane
Those are probably the best names ever...LOL.....LMFAO!
Just Kidding.....What about names like Appolo St. or Mactezuma Lane.
Everyone like the idea of the subway, so I think we should do that to.
And at every 1 of 4 intersections make like a "Market Square"for people to rent and sell there goods.
    Thanks,
    Hash98
  14. if u walk down a street u would notice that the streets are almost randomly generated so finding a place to put a sign would be hard
  15. I've walked down the streets and although they are not all mirror images, I can out the sign in good spots regardless.
  16. I believe this may have been post which caused re-numbering concerns. :)
I think annih makes a valid point though, the live map can be used to find certain lots which are identified by numbers.

This thread seems to be about just the aesthetic appeal of adding names to streets, not with its functional value.
Giving the streets names will not make it any easier or worse to locate certain places, but that doesn't matter because we have the live map to work as a map should. That being the case it is simply a matter of deciding whether or not people want the ability to say "I live on snowball street". It doesn't need to have numbers as an identifier in it at all, because it is only for enjoyments sake. :)
  17. I personally don't see any point to street names, I mean, look how many streets there are.... heaps!

Right, so say Shaun lives on snowball st, that would serve no purpose in locating where he lives. Like Shaun said, its probably more for the Aesthetics :)
  18. If you do give the streets names, don't just go with American names, since theirs others who are not American. If anything, don't give any streets names that might have something to do with a country, maybe just Minecraft names.
  19. We have 4 servers (almost 5)
And a Utopia (Which is stupid because the amount of roads is different.)
    Which makes for 80 streets
    And 80 avenues.

5 roads (Streets + Avenues)per server have a name rather than a number
35 roads per server have a number rather than a name

    It's really not a lot...
