  1. I'm calling this a discussion, but at the same time I have no clue if anyone on EMC actually cares about discussing the Oscars... but I do, so that's one! I'll start with the basic questions:

Who do you think will win big at the Oscars?
Who do you think should win big at the Oscars?

Why are the Oscars important? Look at the examples of Green Book (last year's winner) and 1917. Both of these films got a massive boost at the box office. In turn, this influences the types of films that get greenlit. I've heard many people complain that the nominated films are ones "nobody has ever heard of." Most of the major movies (e.g. Frozen II, Spider-Man: Far From Home) simply aren't deserving of nominations. The Oscars give credit to the best movies (despite some snubs), and through awards, keep the box office income alive. I enjoy blockbusters, but cinema can't solely be Disney. That's why the Oscars do matter. Plus, they're just fun to predict.

I'm going to discuss the categories in this thread and who I think has a chance of winning those golden statues. I would love to hear what the EMC community has to predict. It's fun, don't worry about being wrong. It's near impossible to predict every category correctly.

  3. I've only seen 4 of the movies out of all that were nominated and three of them are only up for sound and visual effect awards. I see a few that I want to see but haven't yet.

  4. That sounds good! Then these nominations actually add something, instead of confirming what was already clear. :)

  7. I was wrong hell yeah parasite
  8. Hm, interesting!
Maybe I should give Joker a listen.
  9. PARASIIIIITEEE!!!! Oh my God I still haven't recovered, I was screaming with excitement when Bong Joon Ho defied the odds and took Best Director. The last time the winner of Best Director hasn't lined up with the DGA (Director's Guild of America) winner was with Ben Affleck for Argo (and he wasn't even nominated at the Oscars). Plus Sam Mendes won EVERYWHERE (except he tied Bong at the CC). After taking Original Screenplay and Director, I just knew Parasite was gunna take picture.

Think of it this way (in terms of Best Picture wins elsewhere):
1917 - Golden Globes, PGA, BAFTAs
Once...Hollywood - Golden Globes, Critics Choice

Parasite had NO best picture precursors. It of course wasn't eligible at the GG because of the foreign language, and it did win best foreign film at the GG, CC, and BAFTAs. The only major award it won was the Ensemble award at SAG (Screen Actors Guild).

EVERYONE LOVES PARASITE THOUGH. When the Oscars went to cue the Parasite crew off the stage, the crowd of A-list actors, directors, producers, etc all stood up and cheered to keep them on for more time! Parasite is also the first foreign language film to win Best Picture!!!!

After the disappointing win of Green Book last year, The Academy has finally redeemed themselves! Parasite finished what Roma started. Now hopefully next year we get some female directors and some less-white acting nominations.

**Fun fact: With Little Women failing to take home Best Adapted Screenplay, not a single female has won in the screenplay categories all decade. This is the first time this has happened since the 1960s.

(I also got 20/24 of my final predictions correct)
