  1. So yeah it's the night of the release who is excited for Pokemon sword and shield?
  2. In any case probably less people than for any main Pokémon generation release except maybe the first! ;)

  3. I've heard about sword and shield it seems like forever. I already thought it was out and that they just keep adding stuff to it.. I'll be excited when the pokemon come to pokemon go..
  4. I am going to update this post in parts, as there is a lot to talk about the lead-up to these games and the games themselves.

For long-time Pokemon video game fans, "Pokemon Sword and Shield" are the most divisive/controversial installments, I think ever...

Let me start from the very beginning...

During e3 2017, The Pokemon Company president and CEO: Tsunekazu Ishihara announced, "Game Freak is currently working on a core Pokemon RPG title - for the Nintendo Switch. It may not release in more than a year, but we hope you look forward to it all the same."
Pokemon Let's Go! Pikachu! and Let's Go! Eevee! were revealed the following year which Ishihara then clarified were not the games he was referring to in 2017. He also declared what would become Pokemon Sword and Shield - were not going to be entry-level games, nor would they be influenced by Pokemon Go, unlike Let's Go. Existing fans were overall excited for Pokemon to finally make its mainline debut on a home console, after twenty years.

BUT then during e3 2019, the Nintendo Treehouse presentation for Pokemon Sword and Shield spawned a catastrophe in the fan base.

This statement by Junichi Masuda, translated by his representative from The Pokemon Company, led to a controversy dubbed: "Dexit" by fans. Not all 809 Pokemon from Generations 1-7 can be transferred into Sword and Shield, because not all of them are programmed into the games. Masuda's reasons for why Game Freak cannot support over 1,000 Pokemon (including alternate forms) in a single game fail to justify this decision.

The backlash from fans was so intense that Masuda went silent on Twitter for two weeks. He came back with a public statement directed towards the Pokemon video game fans (https://www.pokemon.com/us/a-message-for-pokemon-video-game-fans/). However, this message did not amount to much, and some fans only became more hangry.

Long time Pokemon fans have a number of grievances with this media franchise. Someone made a Reddit post on r/pokemon compiling every major problem with Sword and Shield, some of which have been carried over from previous generations. For years, people have been frustrated with how supposedly little effort Game Freak gets away with developing their games for a media franchise worth $90 billion. Pokefans may also get into fights with each other between emotions and rationale: outrage culture...

In a general sense, fans will defend what they are emotionally attached to. I think this behavior is more common in children than adults.

Pokemon Sword and Shield had a good reception among critics. Users/Fans on the other hand, have mixed to negative reactions. Just like Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee in 2018, Sword and Shield were 'review bombed' on Metacritic upon release. Most of the critics mentioned issues with the game and Dexit, but some viewers strongly disagreed towards the higher review scores, like a 9.3/10 and a 9.0/10.

Here is a shortened list of the known problems with Sword and Shield:
    * Dexit - Less than half of the 809 preexisting Pokemon are programmed into the games. Those that lack any data not cannot be transferred to Galar.
Despite the Dex cut, there is arguably less content and overall polish to these games compared to previous titles.

    * The graphics are underwhelming, compared to other first-party Switch games already released, such as Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

    * In the Overworld, Pokemon, NPCs, and interact-able objects have low draw distances, leading to obvious pop-ins.

    * Larger Pokemon, like Tyranitar, Wailord, and Eternatus, are not to-scale. The models were scaled better on the 3DS.

    *

    * The Exp. Share cannot be turned off. This was optional in Generations VI and VII.

  5. My preorder just came in yesterday, though I won’t have quality time to play it until tomorrow
Pretty hyped to have a copy though !!!!
  6. The Pokemon community seems to be extremely divided over this game.

I know almost nothing about the franchise, other than the names of a few OG characters from the early (1989) days. Though I do know that Nintendo really dropped the ball on this, if a majority of the userbase is upset at it.

Let's hope that Nintendo doesn't repeat this in future games, yeah?
  7. How come you know names from several years before the franchise was invented? :p

  10. What...? This is almost as bad as the Sonic "fanbase"... but in a much different way, of course.

To be honest, I never knew that Pokemon had such a cult following, that is, until I just read your post.

  11. Is this really the first time this happened? Would it be possible to take any Pokémon from Pokémon Blue to Pokémon Moon, for instance? I haven't yet got into the second generation... I'm a bit behind. :D
  12. Yup! It was possible. It's a pain in your example, simply because you needed two gameboys and the trading cable to go from gameboy to gameboy advance, and then GBA to DS and so on, but in later generations it was a lot easier. Once all the games were exclusively on the Nintendo DS line, there was a location in game that allowed you to transfer pokemon from one generation to the next fairly easily, which you usually unlocked after defeating the elite four.

I have heard multiple times that Generation I and II are NOT compatible with Gen. III. This is why Game Freak made Pokemon Firered/Leafgreen and then Heartgold/Soulsilver.

However, the first two generations were re-released for the 3DS Virtual Console.
Pokemon from this version can be sent to Generation VII through Pokemon Bank.

  14. I think you are correct and I slightly misspoke. Thanks for the clarification.

In the case of being unable to transfer from the originals, I'd imagine it was more of a problem of hardware limitations than simply not wanting to as is the case now.
