What is one song do you hold dear?

  1. Hello!
So I just wanted to make a cute, quick forum leaving an open ended question to you, the reader:

What is one song, or one album, that you hold dear? What does it mean to you/Why?

    -

I, personally, am stuck between Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles and the album You Don't Mess Around With Jim by Jim Croce. Eleanor Rigby is one of the very first songs I learned to play on my great-great-grandfather's violin and I've been perfecting it for a long time as I take a lot of pride in it! I also resonate with the lyrics. However, this specific Jim Croce album I received as a vinyl record from my great grandmother and she told me a lot about Croce, so it's kind of a connection I have with her.

  2. Killer Queen and virtually any song by them. I have grown up with Queen and that song has remained my number 1, and has always lifted my spirits
  3. I absolutely adore Queen! Especially Killer Queen. Have you heard that Roger Taylor and Brian May are touring with Adam Lambert (as Freddy Mercury)? I've been trying to get tickets and I think that it's something you might be interested in.

  5. This has been my favorite song for a while now :D (and some might say I have an obsession with it :p)
  6. Mine is All Of You by John Legend as this was the song playing when i met the love of my life

  7. *Coughs* just a slight obsession... ;)

Allentown by Billy Joel is the first song that I learned a dance to for my recital when I left gymnastics and started ballet again. It also helped me through my grandfather's death last year.

  8. This song makes me feel so many emotions I can't explain it, I feel like life is meaningless, or that there's something else out there ya know, it feels like life isn't what we perceive it as... Rainbow in the Dark by Dio.

As for albums, I could say my all time favourite is Rust in Peace by Megadeth, Megadeth was one of those bands that opened my eyes to music, and especially guitar, Dave Mustaine the lead guitarist and songwriter is a huge influence on my musical life:

Pink Floyd was my introduction to what music actually is, I had listened to other bands before, but Pink Floyd really showed me what music actually is; my first favourite band.

Then there's Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult, truly the most interesting song, the atmosphere and the feeling that the listener receives is honestly refreshing, compelling and just beautiful, listen to it while not doing anything else... just listen, truly a masterpiece and one of the first songs to open me up to what music can do.

Sultan of Swing, the same feeling is received by Don't Fear the Reaper, just a strange song that gives you a wonderful feeling
  9. (Sorry for carrying on, I hope i'm not bothering anyone with adding more stuff)
    No Second Chances - Whitecross

A song from a 90s Christian Metal band, probably my first introduction to Heavy Metal by my dad, this is the stuff he would listen to in the 90s and 80s. This song will not only be special because of it's relation to my religion, but also because without this song I don't think I would ever get out of my cringy pop-punk phase. Thank you so much, Dad.

    After Forever - Black Sabbath

This song really warped my view of the subject matter of Heavy Metal. Here I was told by people that Black Sabbath was satanic, then they create a song with thoughtful Christian lyrics? What is this, aaa?!! It made me realize that musicians in the metal scene more than likely don't represent their musical content, a Catholic could play satanic music and still not be shifted with their beliefs (main reference to Tom Araya from Slayer). It made me realize all of these parents who called the music I loved satanic and evil were just clueless, they didn't realize the ones they were trashing were in support of their own core beliefs.

    Tout Le Monde - Megadeth

A song about Dave Mustaine's mother's death and the last words someone gives to a loved one, this song will definitely play at my funeral, and that's why it's so special to me, the lyrical content is a tear jerker and it makes you realize that life is fragile.
This song gives me chills every time I listen to it.

  12. None of them have any particular special meaning, I just listen because I enjoy it. I tend to go through phases to where I have a couple of albums on shuffle then later change them around. At present Arch Enemy is up the top of my list :) I won't link any as I'm pretty sure some of them have swearing and I don't want to get in trouble :)

  13. Do you only listen to Killer Queen on repeat? What's your favourite Queen Album?

  15. Not many people realize that besides Queen's top hits, Queen's discography is massive, their first few albums are very fairy tale based but have a quirky feel and meaning to them.

I find that the majority of Queen fans haven't really looked beyond their top 10 songs.
  16. I take moderate offense, all their songs are on my playlist, as I enjoy them

  20. Quite a lot actually...
First of all, there is some classical music:

I'd start with Satie's Gnossenie n.1. I think It's simpely one of the most beautifull works ever composed...
Probably the main reason it means so much as it does to me, is because it was played at the funeral of my mother, when she died aged 46.

After that there's Rachmaninoff's 1st paino sonata... (Op.23,) especially movement three... It's, I think, the most perfect classical piece ever written, yeah, fight me on that. It simpely contains all the reasons I love classical music as much as I do. It has all the agression, all the fire and jet calmness and rest I just cannot find in other genres...

Then, of course, there is Erykah Badu. I've listened countlss times to her album baduizm, from which this song comes.
I started listening to this around the time I started developing my own taste in music, it really was the start of the developement of my musical individu.

Lastly, there is Melody Gardot... There is not a Jelle Music Rant without Gardot... Some lessions is, I think, her most beautifull song. The texture she paints really connects to me every single time. Often, when I cannot properly word people how I feel, I let them listen to a specific song by her. This one, Some lessions, really reflect my emotions a lot of the time, and, mainly, really has painted its texture at the time I was at the depths of my depression four years ago.
