Capitalization filter in private messages

  1. I logged online a few hours ago in a really good mood. I had just gotten home with some exciting news and I immediately wanted to inform a friend in-game about said news. Naturally, in your excitement, you tend to type in caps as a method of conveying emotion to another person. To my horror, telling a friend about finally being able to bake a cheesecake sounded like it was the most boring achievement ever.

I absolutely understand the need to have this filter in mainstream conversation channels to avoid excessive spam, unnecessary shouting, and just to keep the chat channels relatively tidy. However, when you're in a private chat I can't see a reason to need it provided that it's a casual conversation between two people that doesn't impact the larger majority. You can be as crazy sounding as you want to be and the mainstream chat channels would remain unaffected by the private conversation.

I feel that the filter in private chats is unnecessary considering the audience, or lack of despite the 1 other person you're communicating with of course. To me, this is more of a hindrance than a good thing as now I cannot express any words in capslock longer than 4 letters, thus making conversations relatively monotone and uninteresting when discussing an otherwise exciting topic where you want to be able to use caps.

I'm not sure if this is me just being petty and making a big deal out of nothing, or if anyone else feels the same. Is there any reason why the filter was implemented in private chat? I'm curious to know
EDIT: (the suggestion is to remove the filter in private chat)
  2. Now I cant yell out 'DONKEY' to you when I breed a good donkey. My life is ruined.

    Please change this back! :(
  3. You'll recieve a like because how funny I find this.

  4. Fully agreed. :)
  5. It was actually a terrifying experience. I thought of it as not important because it wasn't in capitals. I only just truly realized how amazing being able to bake a cheesecake is.

This is causing serious issues of importantness in our community. It must be changed!
  6. Definitely don't have a problem with this being implemented. Besides over use of it in town chat can just be reported if it's that bad.

  7. I definitely oppose this system too. In fact, I don't think we need caps filters at all. It's not like the person is saying a curse word. Plus, why not just report it if it's extremely obvious that they're just trying to bother others by spamming stuff in all caps? The rules are there for a reason, and as I've already said, the swear word filter is the one we have which we do truly need.

However, I'm about to make my own suggestion to handle some spammers, albeit something different.

  8. Only becuase you want to be able to spawm me more effectivly, don't you?

    (I too aprove)
  9. I can definitely agree. Still, being a supporter means that you can also use something else: ***omg look at this!!*** would result in: omg look at this!! which is also a sure way to get some extra attention in chat.

    More typing though ;)
  10. When something amazing happens, I normally default to this: O.O or o_o
But I definitely understand why some people like being able to go all caps when their excited about something. IMO I think Community, Local, Resident and Economy chat should be the only chats to have the caps filter, and everything else doesnt need it.

  11. Oh yes, agreed. I remember people arguing against swear words in private conversations, but caps shouldn't be an issue, I think.
  12. Personally I see reason for it being applied to community chat. It keeps restraint and reminds people to not go over the top. One of the most appealing features about EMC to me is the clear, tidy and easy to read chat system. :)

I love this new feature. It gives words definition without having to use caps for the most part, especially in community chat where sometimes it can be more difficult to grab someone’s attention. However, my supporter isn’t permanent and while I love this feature, you won’t see me seeking the supporter status solely to use this ability.

Yeah, I stand by the decision to filter inappropriate words from all chats. It encourages good language and provides a clear understanding of what is and isn’t allowed to be said. ;)
  13. Congratulasions on the cheesecake btw!
