  1. The time has come! After 2 years of misery, I am buying a new computer! I am getting rid of my old, beat up 13 inch macbook for something that will keep me happy for a long time. I am looking into a computer which is pretty high spec, since I plan to get an engineering degree in the near future. I would buy a desktop, but I need a computer I can transport back and forth between school. I am willing to splurge a bit, and after a few months of computers, I am deciding on two computers.

    Option 1: Hewlett-Packard Omen

The Hewlett-Packard Omen is a very good looking, good spec'd gaming laptop with a few things I like, such as battery life, elegant design, and ports in the back (which I like). I like this laptop because of the specs, but also because of how it looks. I like it a lot. It is aluminum so it is very sturdy, and will last me at least 6 years with proper care. One problem with it is the price. It is not badly priced, but 1,500 to 1,900 USD is on the upper end of the budget for me, so I could not do much with accessories. It also has Beats Audio, which is decent, but not as good as the Lenovo's audio system.

    Option 2: Lenovo Y50 Touch

The lenovo y50 is another alternative. It is not as thin or light as the HP omen, but it has comparable specs. It is not as good looking either, but it is not ugly. I also like Lenovo as a brand, and have had good experience with them in the past. I like the omen a bit more for its thinness, good battery life, and looks, but there is one thing I like a lot more. It has the same specs, but it is DIRT CHEAP. For 1,300 USD, I get the same spec processor and 4 gb's GeForce GTX, along with 16 GB's of ram and a large SSD. The MSRP is the same, but Lenovo offers deals of their laptops. Right now there is one for 500 USD off MSRP with those specs. It also has JBL Audio, which is a nice touch.

Well, I am pretty stuck on this decision. What do you guys think? If you have a laptop that is a similar price, similar specs, and you think is better, go ahead and put a link in this thread to the laptop. Feel free to voice your opinion :)
  2. The first one if you going to mainly use it for gaming, the second one is used as an all purpose laptop... I would go with the first one...
  3. Yay for engineering! :D What kind are you looking at?

Also, on topic. If you're willing to throw a bit of money into this, why not get a Macbook Pro with Retina Display? Or are you specifically wanting a windows computer?
  4. What separates the omen from being an all purpose laptop, and what makes the lenovo an all purpose laptop?
Specifically, I am going into aerospace engineering. So working with aerodynamics and jet engines. The future lies in traveling in more than two dimensions.

I like macs, I really do, but that is a bit too far out of my budget. I can get a lot better specs with less money when buying a windows computer, and a retina display does not mean too much to me.

  5. Like I said in the OP, I would buy a desktop, but I need something portable. The computers are also powerful enough to manage multiple displays. If i needed 3 or more monitors, I would not feel comfortable with buying a laptop.
  6. Yeah. Two displays. If I got the lenovo, I would have to buy an external graphics card.
  7. I know. That is why I listed price as a con. It is very pricey, and not the worlds best value
  8. I have an Asus ROG Laptop, and I got it mainly for school, and other stuff i do, it has 16 GB ram, GTX Gforce 870m 3GB Ram, i7 Quad core, Battery Life is 14 hours ( not Playing games, doing everything else ).

I would Highly Recomend their computers as their Mother Boards are very well built. I paid 2k for this laptop, but there are cheaper ones.

I am also overclock the GPU and run the fans on full, I can sometimes even cool it down to where it feels like a bag of ice on my lap :p
