Newbies FAQ and Guide

  1. This took literally hours to write so expect there to be many typos and probably quite a few inaccuracies. Please let me know if you find any so they can be fix'd. :)

We've recently had loads of new members flooding though the gates of EMC. If you're one of those newbies, then a huge welcome to the Empire! We all know that when you first join, everything looks a bit confusing. Don't worry, after your first week or so, you'll be a expert at how everything works here. :)

Please take the time to read The Empire Guide and this thread. They both contain the answers to pretty much every question known to man (and woman, Cow and Economy Ruining Tyrant). However, if you can't work out the answer to something after you've had a look in these two places, then please, don't hesitate to ask!

Where can I get additional help if I need it?
If you've checked in all the best places then there's two places that you can ask for help. The first is the Empire Help & Support Forum. Just start a thread in there with your question in and you'll probably get an answer back fairly quickly. To make sure you get the quickest response possible though, it's important that you follow the tips in this guide.

If it's just a command that you can't work out, then try using the command /help in-game. While it doesn't contain as much info as the guide, a fair bit of info is there. If you've checked there already, and it's just a little command that you can't work out, then feel free to ask in town chat. Most of the time, there'll be at least one person online that will be able and willing to help you - and the vast majority of the time, there will be multiple. If you do just get answers of "Empire.us/guide" or "Please read the guide", then it generally means that your question is answered in The Empire Guide - so try looking again. :)

Funny name colors... what do they mean?
This can get a little confusing at times, we all know that. Each color means a different rank. Some are staff and some are supporters. Here's a complete list:

Black - Guest in the tutorial
    White - Regular Player
    Light Grey - Iron Supporter
    Gold - Gold Supporter
    Light Blue - Diamond Supporter
    Green - Moderator
    Light Green - Senior Staff
    Purple - Admin

Supporters are not staff - only moderators, senior staff and admins are.

Will the staff do ____________ for me?
We're a legit survival server. This means we all get our items fairly. Here's a list of things that the staff will not do:
    • Teleport you to a friend or visa versa
    • Spawn items in for you (moderators can't even do this)
    • Ban anyone without evidence
    • Unban anyone without a correct appeal
    • Complete your every request and need. These people aren't paid, so please don't expect them to wait on you hand and foot. They will help you if they can though. :)
How do I get a res? How do I make a shop? Where can I mine?
The Empire Guide has the answer to these questions, as well as many others. The first one is also on /help.

    What's this about chat channels?
Here in the Empire, we have multiple chat channels to try and stop chat from becoming a spam filled mess. Here's what they are and what they're for:
Town Chat - Can be heard by everyone in the town world. They're basically for chatting with the whole server. Please don't use it to just talk to friends though, local, residence and /tells are better for this. Use /chat t to talk in town chat.

Local Chat - Works in every world and can only be heard by people within 100 blocks of you. This is great for chatting to multiple friends in the wild or town alike! Use /chat l to talk in it.

Residence Chat - Can only be heard by someone standing in the res you currently are. Because of this, it also only works in the town world. It's great for chatting to multiple friends! Use /chat r to talk in residence chat.

/tells - The best way to chat to a single friend. They can hear any message you send, no matter where they are. To talk in it, use the /tell [name] [message]. For example, it I wanted to tell IcecreamCow "hi" then I'd use the command /tell IcecreamCow hi. Click here to learn more about /tells.

If you've come from another server then you might be used to having to shout in CAPS, multiple times, just to get people to notice you. It isn't like that here, so please don't do the following things:
    • USE ALL CAPS
    • Spam (send the same message or similar ones repeatedly)
    • Be impatient. If you've asked a question then they take time to answer.
    • Be rude or disrespectful towards others - even if you know them
    • Swear/use bad language. If you're unsure what counts as this then please PM a member of staff.
Am I allowed to break the rules?
No... if you're caught breaking the rules then you'll be punished in the appropriate way. This can range from a warning in chat to an IP ban, depending on the severity of your crime.
It's best to keep yourself refreshed of the rules. You can view them by using the command /rules in-game, or by viewing their page on The Empire Guide.

Can my stuff be rolled back/reset?
Kinda. If you don't login for 10 days then your residence becomes derelict. This means that anyone who wants it can ask for it to be unclaimed, or the automated system could unclaim it too. If you're going to be away for more than 10 days, then let a member of senior staff know and they'll give you derelict protection.

If you don't login for 30 days and don't have derelict protection, then the following things will happen to save space:
    • Anything you're holding will be removed
    • Your location and the world you're standing in will be reset to town spawn
Your rupees, vault contents and supporter status will not be reset.

If you're permabanned and successfully appeal for a second chance, then you'll be reset completely, and will have to start the Empire as a new player.

Unless banned, supporters can not go derelict.

    Huh. Multi-server? Wut?
The Empire has 10 servers - 9 SMPs and Utopia. All the servers are completely public, except for Utopia where you have to be a gold or diamond supporter to go to the wild and claim a res.

You can transfer items from between the servers by using the command /vault. It costs 10r per use to prevent people using it like a chest, can only be accessed from town and is the size of a double chest.

  4. For making request's please follow this guide:

I made this before, but am republishing this because it never took off before :(

The Empire has seen many changes, and more people want to make suggestions. But not all are laid out in a correct way and sometimes are overdone.

    Mod Requests for the server

People ask for mods for Minecraft that modify the .jar file. These will never be added as this requires a Minecraft vanilla server and then EMC would have to modify the files. Another thing people may not know is that it would then require everyone to have that mod installed. So these wont be added so please don't request these.

    Mod requests for the player

These are things such as a minimap mod or a chat mod that modify the player but have no affect with the server. These mods must not be able to cheat for you like a minimap mod giving other player co-ords or a radar for near players. The correct layout, including the title is this:

    [Mod Request] Reis Minimap Mod
Description: The mod adds a map into Minecraft showing local surroundings and you can set waypoints to remember where something is using co-ords
    Download: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/482147-132125-aug17-reis-minimap-v32-05/
    Version: 1.3.2

    Plugin Requests

As the server runs Bukkit it can run plugins. Some of them can be really useful that help the whole server, some just help select people and some wont get used at all these are plugins that are doing work shown to the player others that help reduce lag or help world rendering that aren't as noticeable. So lets say you find a good plugin on the Bukkit site that could really help EMC but you must weigh up the advantages and disadvantages so I found a piston plugin that puts blocks/items/mobs in a chest but didnt think about all the disadvantages so here they are:

    Advantages:
Drops go in to a chest
    Blocks can too
    Useful for donations
    Reduce lag
Stone and cobblestone gens can be set to auto massive reduced price may greatly affect the Empire

    Disadvantage:
    Can be exploited
Stone and cobblestone gens can be set to auto massive reduced price may badly affect the Empire
The plugin maker may not update it to other versions of Bukkit

So there they are some are bigger than others but by the looks of it the disadvantages are bigger so the plugin wasn't added. And here is how to do a plugin request:

    [Plugin Request] PistonChest
Description: The plugin lets pistons push things into a chest
    Download: http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/mech-pistonchest-v0-5-2-pistons-push-blocks-into-chests-1060.25071/
    Version: 1.3.2

So think carefully when making a plugin request to weigh all the odds and make the correct thread.

  5. For the bit about /tells, might I add that you can instead do;
    • @(player name) (message) to send a one off PM
    • @@(message) to reply to last PM recieved.
    Also you can do;
    • @ (player name) to start a private convo with someone,
    • finally, @@ to start a convo if that person messaged you first.
(where any messages typed into chat go to that player without the need for @@)
And finally, /leave to leave that convo so you can talk in chat normally again.

  6. I wanted to make the guide as simple as possible to understand (eg: only listing one command for each thing). I'll link to that post in it though - as it can be important. :)

  12. Like the guide!

    I've got a few addtions -

You may want to mention that supporters are not subject to the derelict policy. They can be offline for 6 months and their lot will be there when they return.

A brief explanation of /vault and server hopping.

I also recommend to include a blurb about trading via shops, and not just tossing people items.

    how od you make spoilers?
  14. How should I trade items?
Never just throw items on the ground. The only safe way to trade items is to use the shop system. You can view info on how to use it in the Empire Guide.
