Caden needs a new computer

  1. Hello my fellow late-night EMC forum browsers.

I am here today with an issue - I am in dire need of a new computer as my current one, after only a year of usage, has come to the point where it can no longer handle most of the games I am playing. For quite a while, I have been playing Minecraft on all regular settings at ~50 FPS, ARK Survival Evolved at ~40 FPS on all low settings and Grand Theft Auto V at ~60 FPS on low settings. This is satisfying, but I need to have a constantly smooth rate. Currently, I have Windows 10, an Intel i5 2.90Ghz processor and an Nvidia GeForce 850M video card.

I need a new desktop. I already have a rough idea of what I want, but I need you fellow people out there to give me the last hand in creating this beast - I need the actual parts.

I know that I want some sort of GeForce processor that is better than the GeForce 950. However, I'm not sure which one is best. I need your help in deciding which video card to get.

I know that I also need an Intel i7 processor. However, I'm choosing between a 3.40Ghz processor (and saving some money) or a 4.00Ghz processor (and not saving money). I will also need your help deciding this.

I want to be able to run the following games at more or less the following speeds:
    • ARK Survival Evolved - around 70 FPS on medium to high settings.
    • Black Ops III - 70 or more FPS on medium to high settings. This is a must have.
    • Minecraft on over 100 FPS at a constant on regular settings.
    • Grand Theft Auto V - anything about 70 FPS.
So, you tell me - what processor, video card and motherboard should I get?

    Thanks,
    Caden
  2. Buy a Mac.

    LOL
  3. Funny joke...
  4. DeathPunchKitty needs a new computer, too ;_;
  5. i5-4690k, i7 is unnecessary for gaming.
    GTX 970
    8GB of RAM
    ASUS Z97-A motherboard

I also don't know your budget, that would be helpful.

You don't need Skylake for DDR4, it only brings 3% better IPC to the table and it costs a lot more right now.
  6. Thank you! My budget is anywhere between 1100 and 1500 dollars CAD.
  7. The cheapest idea is to just build your own computer. You can buy the pieces (it seems you have some already) and put them together. I personally have not done this before, but all of my friends tell me it's cheap, and fun too.
  8. Plenty of a budget! This list is going to do everything you want to do and beyond. Keep in mind that this is USD.

  9. Here is the same list converted to Canadian stores and prices, it's $19 over budget though. You could cut back on the CPU cooler to something like a NH-D15 if you need to stay under $1500.

  10. You are the absolute best! I am not big on liquid cooled systems as a friend of mine had a terrible experience with his liquid cooled system and it roasted his core components, however this list of items looks beastly. Thank you once more!
  11. Then get this instead http://www.ncix.com/detail/be-quiet-dark-rock-3-3c-93614-1244.htm

  12. Good suggestions here, specially the recommendation for the SSD. Definitely get one! I don't know how they influence gaming, but you will love the speed with which your computer starts and shuts down. If you ever shut it down :p

  13. Must be honest, this list is -almost- perfect, after you're changed the cpu cooler (like you did). One thing though:
If you have 3+ alts, then you DEFINITELY need more than 8 GB of RAM. So, if you really don't have more money available now, you should get a 1x8GB stick. If you do have more, I'd highly advise you getting a 2x8GB set (this'll make the RAM work just a little bit better together). This is better over 2x4 GB, because you then have plenty room to upgrade, for if you'd ever need more. I just upgraded from 8GB to 16GB, after I learned how to allocate more RAM to Minecraft, and sometimes I already find myself hitting or coming really close to that 16GB max...
