Tonight we hit an issue on SMP7 where a player let his grinder build up over 400 monsters, and it made the server reach the mob cap.

The cap is impossible to calculate, but when the server is not full its ALOT lower than what it would be say on a weekend, as theirs multiple factors into how its calculated.

So, I ask any of you., please do not let your grinder reach over 200 mobs. Pref kill at 100-150 max.

When this happens, natural spawns cease to happen. I noticed my grinder just completely stopped spawning, and teleported to the player I suspected of the cause and sure enough it was like 430.

I asked him to kill them, and soon as he did, my spawns returned to normal.

To find out how many mobs are loaded in your area, press F3, and the "T: All: ##" number will show you.

Now that also counts item drops so if you got alot laying on ground that'll count too (its Entity Count), but doesnt count towards the mob cap, so pick items up so you can accurately judge

Please do not let your grinder use impact the entire server or we will have to take action against you.
You will not be able to detect if you hit cap with mob spawners as they ignore the cap, only natural spawns are affected, so please just don't let it reach 200+.

and to try to better explain how this works...

A formula is run based on number of chunks... we had roughly 11 people in the wild

so the formula should of been this IF everyone was spread out far from everyone.

    (70 * 11 * (17 * 17)) / 256 = 869.257812

But most of the people are pretty close to each other... so our formula is most likely near 6

    (70 * 6 * (17 * 17)) / 256 = 474.140625

the 440ish the player had in his grinder would of only left 30ish mobs for every player in the wild.

mobs spawning in caves as players walk, etc, used up the rest.

I've never intentionally let it build up, only been twice that it was untentionally built up and was 330~

and yes im still working on it. the idea is to keep a constant flow of monsters to kill, dont need to build em up to use it.

I was wondering why my spider count was down so much. I try to not even work XP on the weekends because it slows down so much. Rubber banding while mining is an issue too so I just about do nothing but feed my EMC withdrawal on weekends with short visits. :p

Thanks, Aikar, for the answers! I've often wondered why the mobs sometimes just stop coming! I could never let that many mobs build up. My FPS drops down to next to nothing if I even approach 200 :(

D3r3k Fawns does this on Utopia. Go check him out, it's VERY frustrating.

Aikar: you have manages to make math fun for me. Although what is the equation you use for the mob cap calculation? With variables, not numbers. I'd like to see how that works out.

Aikar how does your spawner just flow with mobs i try it on singleplayer and it doesnt flow/ work very well

Call me Mr Party-Pooper, but does this not indicate that perhaps we need to address the Mob Grinder issue by kicking players that remain within the same, lets call it 5x5 field for prolonged periods?

If they're AFK at a Grinder then they wont log back in and hopefully the mobs will despawn. If my thinking is right.

Then perhaps we'd see those Enchanted items going back to something you feel they're worth now people can't macro AFK for hours on end. ;)

i would never do someting like that! :)

But you do, and you have multiple accounts to help you too. It's not really fair for anyone else on Utopia. If you're on, there's no point in trying to use mine. And you leave your's on for hours too.

so if we are 5000 blocks away from spawn it will still effect everyone elses grinder?
it only takes 10mins till we reach 430 mobs so i should start killing every 5mins

I do it alot on SMP8 but I never go over say 300 mobs. Some rare times when the server has been full have I let my pc on for some time but the highest mobs spawn Id ever have is 400...

Also,I dont go Afk,I go minecraft on my first screen and BF3 om my second so I still keep an eye on minecraft :)

Use lava and auto kill them :)
  16. Henry_Loenwind Diamond Supporter

Yes, that limit is for the whole server.

Actually, activating a lava blade when you leave your spawner would be a good idea. Otherwise it might continue to produce mobs when the chunk it is in is loaded for another player who's maybe 100 blocks away.

I used to have a grinder on Utopia, I never saw a difference when he was and wasn't grinding..

If your using spawners, they will be unaffected. Its natural spawns that get affected.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the concept of a grinder. If you kill mobs every 5 minutes vs every 15 minutes, your still getting the same exp.

Were not going to take away a gameplay mechanic and say "your leveling up too fast, stop using grinders and level up by wandering the wild"

The problem here isnt the rate people get exp, its the duration in between killing off the pool.

and with utopia's even lower user count, its VERY important you guys kill at 75-100, don't go over that....

We've had numerous reports that natural spawner grinders simply arn't working on Utopia, and I'm betting its due to this.

If anyone has troubles getting natural spawner grinders to spawn, please get ahold of a moderator and we will check out the suspects and kick them so the mobs despawn.

AFK'ing for 10-15 minutes to build up 100 mobs is fine. Theres nothing wrong with watching TV while grinding. just hours at end is unnecessary.

Every 15 mins AT LEAST is fine and should be your target.

Letting mobs build up to the point that it affects every single player in the wild is an act of griefing... don't do it, kill them often.

Does the number of mobs in the nether have a bearing on the number of mobs in the wild?
I can get over 100 blazes in my Utopia grinder in less than 30 mins. I hope I haven't been causing others to go without while I have been AFK from the game (usually surfing these forums at the time).
  20. Aikar Administrator

yes. its Server side. Nether counts towards same count as wild.

Please kill your blazes every 10 minutes on Utopia.
