In short: The flag some of you people on this site are defending is the wrong one. You're defending the war flag (a lot of the time, it is thought by people to be the actual flag of the confederacy) , which I don't see any problems with. The flag people are trying to get rid of is the 'Blood Stained Banner' flag, which genuinely and intentionally indicates white supremacy.
As someone who lives where people are vandalizing, tearing things down, etc....the flag that people want taken down is the Rebel Flag. Most people don't even know the others...
Pretty much. Represents succeeding from and fighting against the Union because they didn't agree with the federal government imposing their laws upon the states unjustly.
Hang on...
For clarification: The Union Flag is the real name for the Union Jack. The Irish had a war with the British Empire/the UK and basically the Commonwealth in the early 1900s for independence from the UK. They don't have much against the Confederate flag (which, I guess, is called the Union Flag in the US? ._.).
The St. George (England's flag) being vandalised by English people is also due to some thinking that the flag indicates white supremacy and should be changed - IMO it's the flag of Saint George, who according to English stories saved the lives of African/black people from a dragon, so... ._.
The Confederacy succeeded from the USA (Union at the time) due to unfair taxations and the federal government forcing their laws upon the states. Basically the whole Civil War wasn't necessary about slaves.
Yeah, slaves were one of the disagreeing points, but most people that fought were fighting to preserve States' rights over federal. They were worried that the federal government was becoming too much like the British Monarchy of the past.
People want the Rebel Flag/War Flag of the confederacy banned from public property because they see it as anti-slave when really it's anti-federal government.
The state flag of Mississippi has the Rebel Flag as part of it's state flag. They even put it to a vote for change and it was voted to stay, 2 to 1. The flag debate is all about two different sides seeing an object as representation of two separate things.
