I can't tell you the number of times I've driven to work (or from it) on "autopilot." After a while it becomes such a routine you don't even notice the trip, then suddenly you realize "Oh geeze, it's this intersection already? How did I get here?" Kinda scary, really.

Well your brain tunes repetitive things out automatically ... you're completely aware of your nose in front of your eyes ... and you technically see it all the time... but because of the repetition of your brain already knowing it's there - it doesn't have to show it for you to know it's there. ;) same with everything else.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was driving home yesterday from a neighboring town on a 55mph/89kph road, two lanes on each side going the same way (not sure how to describe that). There was a car next to me in the other lane, and all of the sudden this other car pulls out perpendicular to the road I am on, in front of both of us, maybe 45ft away.

So I slam on the brakes and screech down the road, missing them by maybe a foot since they decided to floor it. Had I been even slightly distracted, I would have T-boned them right in the center of their drivers door, which would almost certainly have killed them and injured me and my passenger.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that there was a total of three cars on the 55mph road, including myself. I guess waiting a few more seconds for us to pass was too much for that person, and they decided to risk their life and other's to save that time. I was so lucky that there was no one behind me, because I have a sedan, and anything bigger than mine would have sent me on quite the ride at those speeds. Ugh.

The best driving advice I have ever heard is drive as if everyone around you is an idiot. Always be extra careful.

Yeah that's what my dad says too: 'Caleb, never trust anyone ... always think of the other driver as an idiot; you can never be too careful.'
