1.2.3 Lag

  1. Making a test server and posting about it here would get you swarmed. Especially if there was some small rupee reward for chilling on it for a while. Maybe allow people to go mining and free-vault stuff out.

Specifics would depend on the volatility of the test (if it's safe, vs. risking user data) and/or if the server would pull resources away from the live servers, but there's the idea anyways.

  2. Lol I love the super computer idea. Lets spend a couple 100k on EMC and then we won't have lag for years till those computers are considered crappy.

Anyways, thanks for all the hard work Justin. You make EMC the great server it is :D
  3. Forgive me if I am wrong, but wouldn't 8 core processors be a bit of overkill considering minecraft only runs in a single core? I guess most of the plugins could benefit from being reassigned away from the core running mc, but i still dont see it taking advantage of such a monstosity of a server. It is still interesting to know the current developments in supercomputers and their prices though. :)

  4. Well, now that Bukkit is onboard with Mojang. Hopefully the game code will be revised and made less demanding on servers :) After all bukkit is the one that makes awesome servers a reality, so they will do their utmost I believe to ensure AWESOME servers like this can continue to function. :)
  5. you're thinking it through too much...repeat after me;

  6. Meh, Justin is awesome with code dont forget, give him enough time and he'll boost minecraft to be able to run on 8 cores :D
  7. One day Justin will find me in his garden at his house with a Chinook with the super computer on it for him to mess on xD and I will buy the house next door XD

  9. I was waiting for this to happen ;P
  10. had to lol
  11. That is my view of your post :p
  12. No like D: ;P I must try harder :p
  13. Justin my question is on the player side. Is there anything We as players can be doing to help our lag or the lag of the server?
I am all for solutions that can help even a little. With the masses we have on EMC... a little cleanup can make a big difference... :)
    Thank you

  14. Don't join the server if more than 40 people are online. ;)
  15. Well Mr Twitchy.... I do NOT like that answer...lol.... Give me another one! LOL

  16. If I remember correctly, Justin once said that dropped items are treated pretty much the same way as players, so not dropping items, or mining items that will drop items should help. That leaves standing around and running around like crazy.
  17. I agree, I do not like the answer either but I haven't got one... Maybe, rewrite the core Minecraft code to optimize performance and to utilize multiple cores... :)
  18. The current lag problem is weird in a way. We all know the usual lag---the server not being able to keep up with 20 ticks per second and just doing less. The effect is that the sky jumps backwards, items that flow in water jump back, stuff grows slower, redstone things run slower and so on. We had that before the update, massively. But that was no problem. Time just ran slower than it should, so what?

The lag we now have is different. It's not just that the world runs slower. We now have rubberbanding and block destroy/place failing. So the client sends a command to the server but the server does not execute it. I say "destroy block A, destroy block B, destroy block C, move forward 3 steps" and I get "block B destroyed, movement denied because block A is in the way". I even get head movements denied sometimes (quite disorienting, I have to say)! I walk through an open door and my avatar jumps back, then goes through again, jumps back and so on forever---all after I stopped touching the keyboard!

That is not simple overload, there's something broken in 1.2.3.

  19. Not creating huge auto farms that drop thousands of items (wheat, melons, etc). Not creating 500 redstone timers on your lot. Eggifying unused animals and not having hundreds penned up. These would all help :)
